Chris Shaffer  (or just . . . Shaffer)

Owner / Head Coach

I found out early in my life that helping others is what I was put on this earth to do. I love coaching, mentoring and leading: from leading and speaking at church groups, to speaking at high schools about drunk driving , to coaching kids and adults in all aspects of volleyball, strength training, conditioning and healthy lifestyle, and for over 2 decades, I have been doing just that.

I love sports and competition.  Tennis, baseball, basketball, soccer, volleyball . . . you name it, I played it.  Well, except football – I was a band geek. I learned early, that if you want something, you have to work for it and don’t expect it to just be given to you.  My mom is slightly OCD and my dad was in the Navy, so doing things the right way and working hard was (and is) just part of life.

To excel in something you have to be willing to work hard, but not just at working hard.  Digging a hole to China with a spork is hard work, but it’s only just that. It’s not very efficient or effective.  You have to have a great coach to show you what to work hard on and what tools to use.  And after spending the last 20 years coaching volleyball at all levels, that’s what I love to do and am good at,  teaching people the technically correct and most efficient ways to do things, on and off the court.

I stumbled across CrossFit in 2007 when I was looking for something to improve my own level of fitness.

I toyed around with it for a little bit in my own back yard.  Then I learned a couple friends of mine, Jen and Tim, had their own CrossFit affiliate box.  So I looked them up, signed up for a personal training session on the Olympic lifts.  From that moment on I was hooked.  I trained with them anywhere from 3 to 6 days a week.  I studied everything I could get my hands on about CrossFit (and still do).  I was amazed at how great I felt even when I was competing in volleyball tournaments playing against kids quite a bit younger than me.

After soaking up all I could over the years, it was time for me to get certified and begin to coach and give back to the community.  So in February of 2012 I received my CrossFit certification and began to help Jen and Tim coach and train others.

In December of 2012, I had the opportunity to step out on my own and open my own training location.  That month, Shaffer Strength & Conditioning, LLC. was born and the lifetime of coaching and training others had finally been realized.  We received our official CrossFit affiliation in May of 2013 for CrossFit Bezel.

At CrossFit Bezel we strive to ensure that you have fun, are challenged and are technically sound in all movements that are performed.  We understand that there is life outside the gym and we want you to have the highest quality of life you can when hanging out with friends, playing with your kids, running a triathlon, climbing a mountain, playing sports or whatever life brings your way.
